Food safety testing depends on measurement. And measurement depends on having reference materials that are accurately characterised, fully traceable, and produced under a quality system you can verify. CIFGA designs and produces certified reference materials (CRMs), quality controlled standards (QCSs) and matrix materials for agrifood laboratories worldwide, covering marine biotoxins, cyanotoxins and mycotoxins. Every material is manufactured in-house at our facility in Lugo, Spain, from biological source to labelled vial.
For laboratories operating under EU food safety regulation, the traceability chain matters as much as the concentration value on the certificate. As the only reference materials producer in Europe accredited by ENAC (No. 2/PMR003) for certain marine biotoxin reference materials, CIFGA offers something most suppliers cannot: certified values with stated measurement uncertainty, backed by an internationally recognised accreditation.
Regulatory programmes for food safety across the EU and globally require that laboratories demonstrate measurement traceability. That requirement is not administrative. It reflects a practical need: when a shellfish monitoring laboratory in Galicia, a water quality control facility in Australia, or a food testing lab in South Korea reports a result, that result has to be comparable to results produced anywhere else in the world using the same compound. Reference materials are what make that comparability possible.
Under EU Regulation 853/2004 and implementing regulation 2074/2005, official control laboratories monitoring bivalve molluscs for marine biotoxins are required to use certified reference materials with documented traceability. The same logic applies to cyanotoxin monitoring under the EU Drinking Water Directive and WHO guidelines, and to mycotoxin testing under EU Regulation 2023/915 governing maximum levels in food and feed.
CIFGA produces reference materials specifically designed for these regulatory workflows. With over 15 years of production experience, more than 25 publicly funded R&D projects completed, and supply to laboratories in over 40 countries, the materials in this catalogue have been validated in real analytical programmes, not only against internal benchmarks. Analytical characterisation is performed in-house using HPLC-MS/MS, NMR, UV and fluorescence methods.

A certified reference material (CRM) is a substance with one or more property values sufficiently well established to be used for calibrating measurement instruments, validating analytical methods, or assigning values to other materials. CRMs produced under ISO 17034 carry an additional layer of rigour: each assigned value comes with a stated measurement uncertainty and full metrological traceability documented in the certificate of analysis.
A certified reference material (CRM) is produced by a reference materials producer accredited under ISO 17034. A quality control standard (QCS) provides accurate concentration data and uncertainty values for routine laboratory use but is not produced under that quality framework. CIFGA produces both.
Several EU frameworks and international guidelines require or strongly recommend the use of CRMs in official control and routine testing. The main references for the agrifood sector are: EU Regulation 853/2004 and EU Regulation 2074/2005 for marine biotoxin monitoring in bivalves; the EU Drinking Water Directive (2020/2184) and WHO guidelines for cyanotoxin surveillance; and EU Regulation 2023/915 for mycotoxin maximum levels in food and feed. Laboratories operating in third countries exporting to the EU market are also expected to demonstrate equivalent analytical standards.
Yes. CIFGA supplies laboratories in over 40 countries across Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. European customers receive materials without customs delays or import documentation requirements. For international shipments, CIFGA provides full cold-chain logistics and complete regulatory documentation. Selected materials are held in permanent stock, enabling fast, agile delivery.
