Two ready-to-use kits for on-site chemical screening in textile production, quality control and goods inspection. Each kit covers approximately 50 determinations and requires no instrumentation.
Not every testing need starts in a laboratory. In textile production and fashion retail, chemical screening often needs to happen on the factory floor, at the goods receiving dock or during an inspection visit, before a batch moves to the next stage or crosses a border.
That is the context these kits are designed for. Both the Fashion Nickel Test and the Fashion Formaldehyde Test give a result through visual comparison, with no instrumentation, no sample preparation beyond what is described in the kit, and no requirement for prior analytical experience. A technician can run the screening using only the materials supplied in the kit.
The distinction matters because it defines what these kits are for. They are screening tools: fast, practical and designed to flag potential issues early in the production or inspection process. Samples that screen positive can then be directed to a full quantitative analysis in a laboratory setting.
Formaldehyde is used in textile finishing to improve crease resistance, shrinkage control and durability. It is also associated with skin sensitisation and health concerns at certain exposure levels, which is why its presence in textile articles is controlled or restricted in several markets.
The Fashion Formaldehyde Test is a field kit for qualitative formaldehyde screening on permeable textile articles. The test works by applying a reagent to the fabric sample and comparing the colour reaction of the test strip against a qualitative colour card supplied in the kit. No photometer, no spectrophotometer, no laboratory setup.
Each kit contains two droppers, a bottle, 50 test strips, a qualitative colour card, a syringe and a glass slide, covering approximately 50 determinations. The kit is applicable to all types of permeable textiles. It is not suited for non-permeable materials such as leather or polyurethane.
Nickel is one of the most common causes of contact allergy in Europe. Its release from metal components in clothing, jewellery, watchbands and accessories is regulated under REACH, and routine screening is standard practice for manufacturers and importers of fashion articles with metal parts.
The Fashion Nickel Test is a single-solution kit sensitive to nickel in wearing apparel, jewellery, watchbands, keys and other common metal objects. The test is applied directly to the surface of the article using a cotton swab soaked in the reactive solution. A colour change indicates the presence of nickel according to the kit instructions.
Each kit contains a 10 mL dropper with nickel reactive solution and 50 cotton swabs, covering approximately 50 determinations. No equipment is required beyond what is supplied.
Formaldehyde limits in textiles vary by market and product category. Japan’s Law for the Control of Household Products Containing Harmful Substances sets some of the strictest thresholds globally, particularly for articles intended for infants. In the EU, formaldehyde in textiles is addressed through REACH and consumer product safety legislation, with ongoing regulatory pressure toward lower permitted concentrations. EN ISO 14184 defines the standard analytical method for formaldehyde determination in textiles.
REACH Annex XVII Entry 27 restricts nickel release from articles that come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin, including clothing fastenings, rivets, zips and jewellery. The reference test method for nickel release is EN 1811. Screening with a field kit allows manufacturers and importers to identify high-risk articles before committing to full laboratory analysis under EN 1811.
The test uses a reactive solution sensitive to nickel ions. A cotton swab is soaked in the solution and applied directly to the metal surface being tested. A pink or red colour change on the swab indicates the presence of nickel above the detection threshold. The result is read visually, with no instrumentation required.
The kit uses a reagent applied to a textile sample. The reaction produces a colour change on a test strip, which is then compared against a qualitative colour card supplied in the kit. The result indicates whether formaldehyde is present above the detection level of the test. The entire process requires no laboratory equipment.
